Penultimate 1989

Post by H4 » Tue Mar 08, 2011 11:09 am

Just wondering it the 14 organisation has any recognised age alllowance handicaps for older boats.
We've been sailing off 898 (which was used by a club that had mixed fleets with an old Peny) which seems to be about right in handicap fleets with B14, Laser 5000, RS800, 49ers, Spice to sail against.

840 would seem a little optomistic with the fibre glass topped superspars Aluminium mast and no racks, but is there an official figure or guide range for event organsisers that don't have old 14's? Just planning on doing the Starcross Steamer next weekend where there will be quite a few B14's and if we are put on 840 the result we get may not reflect the effort we put in? I'll still do it but its kind of nice to know where you should be (if you're sailing well)

Thanks

Are you referring to the Portsmouth Yardstick handicap system? If so, I think you are dropping the decimal. In the US, I-14 is 85.3 which probably reflects penultimates or older, since the 29er is given 84.5, 505 = 79.8, and 49er = 68.2. I think a well sailed penultimate with good sails should beat a 505. Of course, most penultimates don't have good sails because the price of a new set of sails could buy you a B-2. There is a way of approximating a US portsmouth yardstick handicap for any boat. If you are interested PM me; I have a program around here someplace I can use.

Thanks Steve,

The Portsmouth Yardstick added another decimal place a few years back to cater for an ever increasing list of boats with similar performance, the new I14 is 840.
But the Old Penny with heavy mast and no racks should be a bit slower I feel!its just how much slower? maybe I need the PY list from 1990? and see where it sits against a 505 or fireball?

This is the latest list

The RYA numbering is now completely different than the US Sailing numbering. I couldn't find published methods for determining an experimental yardstick number on the RYA site. However, with new sails you should be in the same ballpark as a B14 or an RS800. The number for a new rules boat in top form should be a bit higher than a 49er, so 820 seems high for that.

I had to do scoring for skiffs for our local fleet.
We used 780 for new rules boats and 900 for pennies in Ottawa.
This seems to work ok but it favors the new boats in breeze and the penny in light air.
49er was 747 but the rig has changed so this should go down a bit.
New 14s are a bit quicker too, probably on par with old rig 49ers.
