Post by Caprice » Fri Nov 05, 2010 2:20 am

Hi i ve been looking in google the top speed of this boats up and downwind, but i could only get the porthmouth numbers and the 49er top speed (24.1knts down).. i was reading that the skiff 18ft is the fastest skiff in the world, but i would like someone how knows all this boats to classified them from the fastest to the slowest.. ive also wath some videos of 29er they look pretty fast, are i14 way faster or just a little bit faster?

bye bye

In order of speed:
18
49er/I-14 (used to be a toss up, 49er slightly faster upwind, and I-14 faster downwind, but now the 49er has a new larger, more modern rig, so is presumably faster)
29er

A 29er is much slower than an I-14

Typical I-14 speed: I've heard from folks that own velocitek gps devices that upwind speed is 10-11 kts in flat water, downwind speed 15-18 kts. Occasionally someone will break 20 kts downwind or 2-sail reaching.

Totally agree with the I14 speeds from Shu. My crew and I just went out for a final sail of the season in Ottawa in 10-15 knots and remarkably flat water. Upwind 9-11 knots, touching 12 occasionally. Downwind 16-18.5 knots.

I've only seen the Velocitek steadily read 20 knots once and it was followed by much swimming.

Unfortunately Moths kick us all now, but perhaps they're not deemed a skiff ;-)

They should be properly called a hydrofoil

Anyone know where an OD 14 stands in this.. both grand prix and standard rigs
i found something via google books that claimed speeds of 10knots upwind and 25 downwind... seems to me to be an overestimate.
