Hi folks, I was asked yesterday who built my OD14 and I had no answer for them... I wanted to see if anyone new where my boat was built. The serial number is: FMU14262E595.

Thanks for any help.

Ricky,
I pulled the following info from the US Coast Guard site. The "FMU" on the HIN (Hull Identification Number) stands for FORMULA YACHTS INC. The went into business around '78 and out of business around 2002. They were located in CT and were registered to build sailboats, cats and trimarans.
Every HIN has a formula you can follow or look up on the Coast Guard site. The old US HINs and international HIN used to differ so that can take some deciphering:
FMU14262E595
FMU = formula Yacht Inc
14 = describes their code for the type of boat (in this case 14)
262 is typically the number of boats made but builders have often started with 100 so it can be misleading
E is the month built (A is Jan so E means the boat was built in May)
5 = the model year 1995
95 = 1995
it was a 1995 model yr boat built in May of 1995

If you need more info you maybe be able to google the company or someone else can chime in.
Jake

I thought the first OD14s (well the most recent incarnation) were build by Bruce Boatworks in Canada. That's who built the Cross III I14s which became the OD14.

Late to the party, but One Design 14 #262, named "Ludicrous" was originally built by a company called Jibe Tech...The first few years of the OD14 class, developed by the Johnstones were built by a different builder....When they sold the rights to the class to Marshall Saffer, the boats were built by JibeTech, and sold exclusivley from the Saffer's parents home in Armonk, NY....

Somewhere on this board, (or maybe I saw it on SA) Peter Johnstone told the story of how the OD 14 came to be back in the late 80's...It was originally based off of Jay Cross' design for the Canadian I14 team in the 80's, and the Johnstones came up with the idea to make it One Design with both a Standard Rig (1 trapeze, smaller mast, boom, jib, and kite), and a Grand Prix Rig (2 traps, taller mast, longer boom, overlapping jib, and larger kite off a 7ft. pole).

Ludicrous, US262, was a newer hull built in the mid 1990's, and was originally owned by then OD14 Class President Bruce Kohut out of Tom's River, NJ. The boat was very well taken care of, and Bruce and his son sailed it pretty well...

I bought OD 14 hull #230, also a Jibe Tech built OD14, and sailed in the class for 3 years, before parking it for a while due to burn out...

This season, I'm planning on rigging it back up and splashing it for a bit of fast fun....

Anyway, there's your info. on OD 14 #262!
Cheers!
