hi everyone, i was looking at the pics of the new b6 (awesomeeee) and also wathcing others i14 pics, and i have a doubt... is the extension of the Rudder suport (the one that takes the rudder further back) is inside the 14 foot LOA? or this not count??

It is not considered part of the hull, but rather a fitting and does not need to be within the 14 feet overall length of the hull.

Fun with rules :-)

The extension provides more separation between the rudder and centerboard, allowing more leverage for steering. Or, put another way, it reduces the leverage the boat has on the helm.

The rudder pod or gantry is not part of the 14 hull. over time it has moved aft as the mast came aft.
now the mast is in the middle of the boat and the leach of the main is well over the transom ,this aft rudder helps balance out the helm upwind.
the problem with going any farther back is downwind! the leehelm is bad enough. something a crew would never understand.
Caprice , thanks for the comments on the new boat!

Hi Kris,
Wouldn't moving the helm aft actually help with lee helm? It increases the turning moment on the boat induced by the rudder. I think the rudder came aft to keep separation from the centerboard in response to the centerboard coming aft, which in turn reflected the rig moving aft. I have quite a bit of lee helm with spinnaker on my first boat, since (among other things) the rudder is hung on the transom, decreasing the separation from the centerboard.

However, moving the rudder further aft would tend to increase the amount of bow down with the horizontal foil in the positive (lifting) position, since you can only move driver and crew so far aft. I think this is the reason we have stopped moving the rudder aft, and one of the reasons the horizontal foil is being moved forward on the rudder.

As for the crew not understanding lee helm with the spinnaker up -- lol -- I really enjoyed crewing for Jake on the downwind legs in the previous weekend's San Diego NOOD. It was nice not to be wrestling with the tiller extension.

And congratulations again on the new boat - very nice. For those who haven't seen her, the new B6/H2 looks even better in person than in the photos.
