Possibly moving to USA, any 14s on the Gulf coast?

Post by EdS » Fri Sep 28, 2012 7:16 pm

Hello,
I am potentially moving to Houston at the end of the year. I would be moving to Houston Tx.
If it goes ahead gbr1524 would be coming with me.
Are there any 14s down there or am i looking at a very long commute to come and play on the west coast?
If not maybe i can encourage some people into sailing 14s down there.

Thanks,

Ed

Ed, would be great to have you in the US. Unfortunately, not much (none) action in Houston so far as I know. Was some interest a few yrs ago, but nothing happened. There were a few old OD 14s, but that was a few Hurricanes ago! Unfortunately, you will find that the US is a very large country, and long trips to get to 14 sailing (24 hr drive to SD). Most US 14 sailing happens along the west coast. We would love to have you out here. We have been trying to set up consistent sailing in San Diego during the winter / spring, and sounds like we'll have some others here after the HI PAC Rims in Oct. Rumor has it that one of the new B6 boats built for an owner in Australia, may be staying in the US, he is doing some work in Houston on a routine basis and hopes to stop through SD to sail boat through our winter (nice sailing in SD) series. I have a brother in Houston, and just not any 14 sailing going on there. There are some 'Texas center board' events which have several differant boats trying to sail Portsmouth. Let us know if can answer any ?s.

I just saw a thread here by someone else wondering if there were any 14s sailing on the gulf coast. I'll try to find it and post the link.

Try this. He has an older new rules boat sailing around New Orleans, which is maybe 5 hours from Houston?

Thanks for the responses chaps.

This is still a vague possibility, but it is good to check out the high priority items when looking at relocating.

I thought that was the case, maybe i can get work to relocate to the West Coast.
I guess i would aim to keep it in Houston to practice outside of hurricane season.

Yes a 24hr drive is slightly too far, but direct flights arent expensive (99USD each way, in advance) which is feasible for several long weekends a year.
What is the distribution of the boats along the coast?

The next question is how to get the boat to the west coast or gulf after Toronto, but I am assuming people havent discussed logistics yet.

The distribution on the west coast is as follows:

A fleet in Seattle
A fleet in the San Francisco Bay Area (primarily Richmond YC)
A fleet in the LA/San Diego Area

Additionally, we have individual fleet members in places such as Columbia River Gorge, Truckee/Tahoe, San Luis Obispo.

Shu,

Where do you sail?

On a similar topic.
I am going in holiday to the San Diego during the second and third week of December.
Is there any sailing activity then and if so would be great to meet some local 14 sailors and if anyone needs a crew assuming you still sail in December, that would be the icing on the cake.

Thanks,

Ed

The sailing never stops in California!

I don't know the San Diego schedule, in SF we race the first Sunday of Dec, Jan, Feb and March.

I sail in San Diego. We have the One Design Weekend regatta the first weekend of every month. We can probably put a practice day together and get you out on one of our boats.

If that works that would be great, although if it is too much hassle no worries.
I can take another day off and come up Thursday night/Friday to give it the best chance of working.

Very exciting, at the very least will be good to meet people if they are sailing that day for a drink.

Ed,
We will make it a point to get you out one way or another. I have an extra B3 that some of the youger sailors are sailing at SDYC, we can get you out on either that or my B5. Either way, can make it work. Stay in contact and we will figure out sailing as well as drinks after! Hope you like IPAs!
Cheers,

Hey Ed,
I'm the guy with the 14 in New Orleans. Did you end up coming to the states?
