Re: Penny / OD

Could someone post pictures of the shroud tensioning system on a penultimate boat. It seems I have the block mounting plate on my boat just not the blocks. Just wondering how that all works. There's some pics in my I14 photo gallery that show the shroud tensioning system on my Cross-III Penny (http...

Re: Insight to my 14?

To: RockTheSail I have also just purchased a penultimate I14 By bruce boat works out of Toronto. It seems you purchased yours in better condition though. I purchased my hull, spars, and blades for 400$ which I thought was a pretty good deal. The problem lies in that the boat was basically stripped....

Re: Rebuilding an I 14

Does any one reconize this design? I am rebuilding the same model that somewhat survived a huricane. Is it possible to find original design specs? Can a 470 mast be converted to work? Also it is important to note that this is for the fun of rebulding and for the fun of sailing, not for racing. Than...

Re: Sailing questions

Hey, after a relatively difficult day of sailing in high wind and waves yesterday I have a couple questions for you more experienced people. First off, how do you keep the mainsheet in the boat? Tie the end of the mainsheet to a small length of bungy cord, then tie that bungy cord to the mainsheet ...

Re: riggin spinnaker

I recently got an older ovington I 14 and am trying to rig the spinnaker. How do you rig the bowsprit lines so that it deploys and comes back in at the proper time. Are you adjusting both lines, spin halyard and bowsprit line, or do they run together somehow? Thanks Check out the "Penny/OD" thread ...

Re: worth buying this 'penny'?

Well, back to square one. The one in Ottawa was sold, so now I'm back to looking for one. Do any of you know of any older I14s that aren't being used as much anymore? I'd like to get one sooner so that I can learn to sail it while the water's warm and the breeze light. Come Sept, it'll be too cold ...

Re: worth buying this 'penny'?

That looks just like my 1986 Cross III, there's a bunch of tid bits in this thread about that genre of boat: http://forum.international14.org/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1217 For $1500 and that vintage I would expect road trailer, beach trailer, multiple sets of sails, and a boat ready to sail in decent win...

Re: Broken mast

Not sure where you were in the boat when this happened, but being on the trapeze lowers the force on the shrouds. When it gets squirrely and I have to stay seated with the crew behind me on the trapeze (gets weight further aft) I have resorted to hanging on to the trap handle to help the shrouds ou...

Re: Penny / OD

so after my last sail i noticed a disturbing amount of water in my hull, which has put my "all in one" spin halyard project on hold. i pressurized the hull and went around with soapy water and found a couple of little things on the hull, and some pretty bad spots in the daggerboard trunk. does anyo...

Re: 1986 Penny RYA Yardstick?

We used a rating of ~900 for Pennys in Ottawa and that seemed to work well. The Penny was pretty even with the Vanguard Vector and a touch slower than the Laser 5000. Cool thanks - my boat is a Penny from Ottawa so that should work well. The 505 handicap is 902 and I seem comparable to our local 19...

1986 Penny RYA Yardstick?

Anyone happen to have a copy of the circa 1986 RYA Portsmouth Yardstick numbers? A typical race night at my club includes Laser's, Laser II's, 505, Fireball, 420...all starting together, and I think the current 2010 RYA numbers (http://www.rya.org.uk/infoadvice/racing/pages/portsmouthyardstick.aspx)...

Re: Kite Sock

I needed one last year so I went to North Sails with the specs and they made me one for fairly cheap (<$100CAD) in less than a week. Do you still have the specs? Not sure if I quite like my design and would be curious to see what design you gave them. I discovered a lady in town with rip-stop nylon...

Re: Penny / OD

still my problem is getting the halyard from the bottom of the mast onto the Foredeck as you can see it exit's at the very bottom of the mast. i suppose i will have to rivet in another block on the mast, or something along those lines. I think mine may have been that way at some point, but I've edi...
