77 I14 For Sale Near Chicago, IL

I bought this boat 2 years ago by mistake, not knowing I need "crew" to help me sail it. I didn't want to race. Just bought out of ignorance. It's on a rebuilt tilt trailer - new bearings, new tires, all new lights and wiring, and new paint. I have an Illinois title for the trailer. I know little ab...

Re: sail battens

Well, this took me long enough, but, my batten pockets are 1 3/4' wide from stitch to stitch and the lengths are, from top to bottom, 29", 39", 39", 29". West Marine sells un-tapered batten material in up to 12 foot lengths.Think it would be OK to cut my own and clean up the ends so they're not shar...

Re: Chicago area I 14ers

Thanks for your reply. My boat is a '77. I think the sail number is 387, but I want to check again before I bet on it. I have to get the main out this weekend to measure it up for battens, so I'll check then. I do have some pictures posted here, http://www.flickr.com/photos/ash13brook/sets/721576247...

Re: Midwest 14's

I'm in the South Chicago suburbs.

If you fit the description, I wouldn't mind heading down your way if there's enough fair weather left.

Thanks,

Chicago area I 14ers

Are there any I 14ers in the Chicago area? Let's make that Northeastern Illinois /Northwestern Indiana/Southwestern Michigan. I am a complete rookie and am looking for someone with some knowledge to take a look at what I have and give me a little advice on what, if anything, I might need to get my b...

Re: sail battens

A hardwood? Or could they be pine? And do they need to be varnished or epoxied?

Thanks,
Matt

Re: sail battens

My sail says US387.
The battens are only about two feet long. There are 6 or 7.
Can I make these myself? From what?

Thanks,
Matt

Re: sail battens

I guess I didn't think about all that. I'll have to get them out in the next week and photo them and get back. I don't know about any of the rules. I mostly bought it to 'just sail', but I'm finding out I might be in a touch deep! It's a '77 and that's about what I know. And it might be British buil...

sail battens

I just got my sails out for the first time. They don't have any battens in the pockets nor do I have any.
What do I make them from? and what dimensions?

thanks,
Matt

Complete rookie needs help

I just bought a 1977 I14 (according to the registration). That's all I know. Period. I haven't sailled in 40 years and then I mostly was just along for the ride. I did take a basic sailing course through the City of Chicago Park District a few years ago. For right now, I just need to know about the ...
