Q&A with Brad Devine

A great technical Q&A with Brad Devine from Geelong. Some pretty amazing systems on his b5, including a rig taken from a 16' skiff that has adjustable spreaders. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fp0shHPxug Something I think about a lot in sailing these boats (I sail a B3) is the tradeoff between sim...

Seattle -- how soon can you get this kid in a 14?

Saw this on SA and thought "this kid needs to be in a 14 as soon as humanly possible." I didn't think anyone could make an opti look fun or extreme...

Re: spinnakker design

Panduro, I disagree that the new boats are harder to sail. Yes, the sail area is bigger, and they can be a bit more complex, but in my experience older boats are just less comfortable and less ergonomic. The whole point of 14 sailing is to have everything in balance; if you're not loaded up, you can...

Re: B3 How competitive

As a B3 sailor on the younger end of the fleet, I will echo the comments above. We've found we have a long way to go before we get the max out of the boat, and by then maybe we can afford a newer design :) Still, at our best we've been able to mix it up with newer boats. ASA, where are you located? ...

Re: wanted: used T foil rudder, USA

I'm out here for a week to sail with the Madison fleet and was able to get out on Ikazuchi for the first time a few days ago. What a well-sorted and fun boat! Gets a bit sketchy bouncing off of waves because she floats so high -- I think getting a t-foil in the water will go a long way to evening ou...

Re: Wanted - East Coast - Starter/Fixer-Upper/Budget 14

Yes! We ended up buying a B3, 1135, from Ottawa. We sailed her out of Newport in 2010 (and raced the NAs, which was quite a steep learning curve!) This summer, Toby moved out to Madison, WI, where I was able to join him for a few months, since I work from home here in DC. Another friend of ours has ...

Re: In the Groove!

Here's a photo of us lining up against some Coasties somewhere in South Carolina last winter. I think we could have taken them in a drag race... wintersummer.jpg We found a training trip like this can be done on the cheap, and for a New Englander like me, sailing in the first week of January feels l...

I figured I'd post this here after suggesting it to you:

The tube splices might be a good way to solve this, though I've never tried it myself.

Re: Wanted - East Coast - Starter/Fixer-Upper/Budget 14

Well, we found a great boat for our budget -- a modified boat from the early 90s that looks plenty fast and fun. The only issue is she's on the west coast, in Seattle, and we're on the east coast, and my volvo can't quite travel that far. Fortunately, she's on a trailer that we're told can make the ...

Wanted - East Coast - Starter/Fixer-Upper/Budget 14

Hello, My name is Jay and my buddy Toby and I are looking to buy a 14 in the northeast or on the east coast. Unfortunately, we're under-employed recent college graduates, and so our budget is pretty limited ($3k or less). However, we're passionate 14 sailors, having first encountered one when a frie...
